As ravaging as the coronavirus pandemic was, there were a few bright spots: dogs got walked more; humans discovered cocktails to-go.

And “Zoom weddings” became a thing.

Virtual marriage ceremonies became a symbol of love persevering in a trying time when lockdowns restricted travel and large in-person weddings. The global fashion and retail industry’s reliance on producing quick-turnaround goods at a low cost through outsourcing and complex, globalised supply chains has allowed forced labour to thrive, workers’ rights advocates warn, claiming that major fashion brands profiting from the model seem reluctant to change.

The apparel sector employs over 60 million workers worldwide, according to the World Bank Group. And while 97 percent of fashion and retail brands have codes of conduct and corporate social responsibility (CSR) standards, such policies are neither effective in preventing forced labour nor in ensuring remedy outcomes for workers, according to advocacy group

BSW: Four local women open new cosmetics store in downtown Homewood

Four local entreprenuers held the grand opening on July 3 of their latest project, BSW Cosmetics, a new cosmetics store at 2050 Ridge Road in Homewood.

The family-run business is owned by Katrina Brown, Tiara Jackson, Kim King and Latanya Tharpe. Jackson and Tharpe are Homewood-Flossmoor High School graduates.
