For a spell, COVID-19 ― and the switch to remote work ― put some unprecedented pressure on the billion-dollar global beauty industry. Cosmetic sales slumped heavily for most of last year ― in fact, sales of all beauty products last August were down 25% compared to six months prior. Lipstick was the hardest hit product, understandably so: A face mask and a heavy matte lip don’t play nicely together.

At the time, 71% of women surveyed by the market research company NPD Beauty said they “wear makeup less often due to COVID-19 lifestyle changes.”

Jupiter Farms’ Eric Westergard charged in death of Perrin Damron

JUPITER FARMS — A Jupiter Farms man was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree murder after he led police to the body of a 23-year-old Stuart woman in an Indiantown canal, according to the Palm Beach and Martin county sheriff’s offices.

Sally Beauty names its first woman CEO

Denton-based Sally Beauty Holdings has its first female chief executive officer.

Denise Paulonis, 49, a former chief financial officer at Irving-based Michaels, comes to Sally Beauty from Sprouts Farmers Market, where she had been CFO since February 2020.

She will succeed Chris Brickman, 56, on Oct. 1. Brickman has been CEO since 2012 and will remain on a consulting basis through March “to support an orderly transition,” the company said.

Paulonis has been on Sally Beauty’s board since 2018. She was at arts and crafts retailer Michaels from 2014 to 2020 and held several executive positions from 2000 to 2014
